Ben Harper and his band The Innocent Criminals have always been a phenomenal improvisational band, best enjoyed live. The essence of the band's live attributes have finally been captured on "Diamonds on The Inside". Harper stepped into Sunset Studios in California for the "Diamonds on The Inside" sessions with all of his songs completed yet missing all those spontaneous pieces that make a song complete. Harper and the musicians appearing on this album got together to add some jams and other interesting tidbits to this recording. Some of my favorite tracks include: "Pictures Of Jesus" with Ladysmith Black Mambazo contributing luscious Africanesque vocals, the opening track is the catchy reggae infused "With My Own Two Hands," the title track "Diamonds on The Inside" can potentially evolve into one of the albums singles. This disc's most engaging aspect may be its raw and eclectic songs that make you feel that you're listening to a live recording without the background noise and applause.
