Burrell & Coltrane

For fans of the legendary John Coltrane, this CD is a must to add to their collection. This studio jam session was recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey o­n March 7, 1958. The digital re-mastering has given the recording a crystal clear tonality, which is a pure pleasure to listen to. Kenny Burrell o­n guitar is the nominal leader of this session. Miles Davis side men Tommy Flanagan o­n piano, Paul "Big Paul" Chambers o­n stand-up bass and Jimmy Cobb o­n drums round out the quintet. Burrell does a masterful job of overseeing the proceedings and plays some stellar guitar, but there is no disputing who the star is. John "Trane" Coltrane displays some of the finest jazz saxophone ever played o­n this album and we see the influence of his having played with Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. o­n the first tune, "Freight Trane" Coltrane lets loose an a superb sax solo to cap off a classic jazz tune. "Lyresto" is another song that stands out o­n a disc that brings us back to the days of classic jazz featuring Trane's famous "Sheets of Sound" vibe. Enjoy some mellow moments as you listen to o­ne of the all time sax greats, John Coltrane.
