Mellencamp Keeps His Fans Bopping

the-wallflowers-liveAs the summer of 2001 becomes a memory, the nights of summer held on for a few more hours at the Molson Centre on the night of September 10. The sounds of rock n’ roll graced the crowd of about 7,000 fans. Kicking the evening off were the Wallflowers, featuring front man and heartthrob Jakob Dylan. The Wallflowers made their intentions clear, no fanfare, just straight ahead rock n’ roll music. There may not be any social or political message in their music, but the Dylan family talent runs deep. Playing hits like “Sixth Avenue Heartache”, “One Headlight”, and David Bowie’s “Heroes”, the Wallflowers decided to show us a more tenacious side by closing their set with “The Who’s Won’t Get Fooled Again”.

John Mellencamp returned to Montreal with the same kind of exuberance and energy that his fans have always known and expected. Continuing with the theme of cover songs, the set opened with a blazing version of The Rolling Stone’s classic “Gimme Shelter”. Mellencamp brought with him a well-polished nine-piece band. The second song of the night was “Peaceful World”, a song with a gospel feel that will be featured on Mellencamp’s upcoming album Cuttin’ Heads (slated for release October 23). The hits continued all night long including “Paper In Fire”, “Crumblin’ Down”, “Jack And Diane”, ‘Pink Houses”, and the “Authority Song”. The crowd was intimate, but the cheers were fierce. No fancy dance steps or pyrotechnics, just music and songs, whose themes of living in a small town or living your life to the fullest still ring true. Putting on a show that was a true tribute to his fans, John Mellencamp might be making a comeback, but it feels like he never left.
