The songs for this recording came from Willie Nelson's USA Network concert event, recorded live in New York City at The Beacon Theatre on April 9th, 2003. Willie Nelson is 70 years young this year and he's celebrating his 70th by crisscrossing the country playing several concerts with "The Dead" and other legendary musicians. Willie Nelson's (and friends) latest live recording "Live And Kickin" offers some wonderful moments but also falls short of the mark at times. The concert sounds quite impromptu and perhaps it was just thrown together with little or no rehearsing. The album's song selection includes several of Nelson's most memorable material. The CD opens with, "I Didn't Come Here (And I Ain't Leavin')" and rolls into "Night Life" (with Eric Clapton), "Blues Eyes Crying In the Rain" (with Shania Twain), "Homeward Bound" (with Paul Simon), "Beer For My Horses" (with Toby Keith), "Crazy" (with Dianna Krall and Elvis Costello), the schmaltzy "To All The Girls I Loved Before" (curiously, with Wyclef Jean), "Wurlitzer Prize" (with Norah Jones), "She Loves My Automobile" (with ZZ Top…?), "Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground" (with Shelby Lynne), "A Song For You" (with Leon Russell and Ray Charles), "I Couldn't Believe It Was True" (with John Mellencamp), "Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning" (with Kenny Chesney), "Run That By Me one More Time" (a precursor perhaps; with Ray Price) and a surprising last song, "One Time Too Many" with Steven Tyler. The vocal pairings on this album are interesting and in some cases inspired, however several tunes lack luster; check out this disc at your local record store and decide for yourself.
