Festival International Nuits D’Afrique

This is the 19th edition of this very popular Montreal summer music festival. Tourism Quebec awarded the Nuits D'Afrique its 2005 grand prize in the category of Festival and Tourist Event. It is the world's largest festival that celebrates the music of Africa, the Antilles and Latin America. At this year's festival the programming is sure to have something for everything due to its amazing quality and variety. Nuits D'Afrique boasts more than 400 artists from 30 various countries performing in the over 50 indoor and outdoor concerts. There are 20 indoor paid shows at various venues and 30 outdoor shows, happening at Place Emilie-Gamelin (Ste-Catherine and St. Hubert), which are free. The cost for the paid shows is very affordable and range in price from $13 to $29. This is a festival which really covers the globe and is aimed at the diehards or beginners.

Among the highlights of this year's festival are:

-Yerba Buena: This group was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005. They fuse the various musical styles of Afro-Cuba, pop, hip-hop, funk, and soul and they are a definite do not miss! (July 15th)

-Celso Machado: He is a guitarist/percussionist who has had a thirty year career playing music that mixes Brazilian beats with those of Arabic, European and African music. (July 12th)

-Papa Wemba: A living legend, whose career started in the 1960s, revitalized the Congolese rumba and his show promises to be a treat to your ears and to move your feet. (July 16th)

-Mino Cinelu: He had as a teacher none other than Miles Davis and this shows in the various and experimental sounds Mino uses. He fuses afro-rhythms with pop and lounge to create a unique sound that has to be heard. (July 18th)
