East / West is another extraordinary CD from the master of the guitar, Bill Frisell. This two disc live CD brings together the East and West coasts. Featuring live tracks on side one from Yoshi's in Oakland, California (west) and on disc two live tunes from The Village Vanguard in New York City. Both of the venues are renowned locations. I'm especially familiar with The Village Vanguard having seen Bill Frisell their on a couple of occasions. The east performance included: Bill Frisell on guitar and Kenny Wollesen on drums and percussion, with Tony Scherr on bass. The west side includes Bill Frisell on guitar, Kenny Wollesen on drums and percussion and Viktor Krauss on bass. Bill Frisell is one of the most creative and interesting guitarists alive today. He won a Grammy Award earlier this year and he has always been revered by his peers. On these two discs Frisell focuses on a mélange of jazz, traditional Americana, folk, and even soul. The wonderful equilibrium of original compositions and well known cover tunes adds to the overall brilliance of this CD. Among the 16 tracks on these 2 discs my favorites include: "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," "Goodnight Irene," "Tennessee Flat Top Box" and "Ron Carter." Anyone into finely crafted and creative music will love this new Bill Frisell CD.
