Anytime anyone hears Alison Moyet's voice for the first time (whether when she was with the band Yaz in the 80s or her solo work) they stop and ask who that is. This lady has an incredible set of pipes! She has used her beautiful gift in all types of music ranging from dance tunes to blues to torchsongs. The strength and softness within her voice is quite unique. There is almost an operatic quality to her voice which really comes through on this album. Moyet performs 12 covers of some of the most loved and sung songs of all time. She ranges from older classics ('The Man I Love' and 'Bye Bye Blackbird') to more modern ones ('Almost Blue' and 'God Give Me Strength'). The arrangements (which have given an interesting twist to some old standards) and instrumentation on the album is great, but the producer was wise enough to give the focus to Moyet's incredible voice. The warmth and romance of the album makes it a perfect accompaniment to a dinner party or even a candlelit dinner a deux.
