Known to the music world as a master of the oud (a Middle Eastern stringed instrument), Lebanese-born Rabih Abou-Khalil has thrown us a curve by bringing a new, for him, instrument of the piano into his music. Khalil has been making music for roughly 25 years and on this his 11th album he has brought on board well-known German jazz composer and pianist Joachim Kuhn. Together they have made a fresh and interesting sounding recording; they have created a sound that cannot be tied to any culture or country. This recording is an interesting mesh of Middle Eastern music with jazz. Combined with percussionist Jarrod Cagwin this album is a truly collaborative effort. As a musician, Khalil is an example of an artist who does not rest on his laurels or stay in his safety zone. Khalil is ever changing and evolving as an artist and his music goes along with him. As music listeners we should appreciate artists like this and go along on the great ride that they take us on.
