As a response to Sonny Rollin's 1957 release entitled "Way Out West" Joshua Redman recorded his latest album in New York and called it "Back East". Using three different trios, without piano, using a drums, sax and bass combination, it is definitely not your usual jazz sound. Musicians such as Rueben Rogers, Brian Blade and Ali Jackson and songs by Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Stan Getz are featured on the album. The album was meant to be a tribute to all the great sax players who have come before him, but it ends up being a showcase album that really gives the listener an indication of the type of huge talent that Mr. Redman possesses. You can check out Joshua when he performs at Place des Arts on June 30 as part of the Montreal Jazz Festival.
