Every year for the past 24 years the largest gathering of balloons in Canada happens just 20 minutes outside of Montreal in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Approximately 350,000 people flock to the 9 day festival in order to take in the magnificent balloons in flight. The balloons take to the sky two times daily at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. weather permitting. On the Saturday nights the balloons are light up at around 8:45 making them look like beautiful Chinese lanterns. Many of the over 100 balloons that take part in the festival are your typical colourful balloons of the normal shape, but the festival also includes special shape balloons such as bumble bees, a panda bear, Tweetie Bird, a beaver, a pirate, and a daisy amongst others.
Those that come to the festival don't only get to see or ride on the balloons, but there are also music/comedy shows and a whole array of other activities to check out while you are there. For instance, on stage you can catch performances by Dennis DeYoung of Styx, Eric Lapointe, Loco Locass, Daniel Lavoie, Les Cowboys Fringants, and Stefie Shock. Also on the ground you can have fun at the Beauce Carnaval's Amusement Park with all their rides, pet some barnyard animals at The Menagerie, burn off some of your energy on the many trampolines of the Shake It Up Zone, and check out or buy some of the artisana by local vendors on the Craftsmen's Walkway.
