In the late 1980s and early 1990s you could not turn on a radio without hearing the boy band New Kids on the Block singing their latest hit. These five Boston boys made young girls hearts flutter while they sang and danced their way to the top of the pop charts. After they strung together 70 million in album sales, sold out concerts worldwide and a sting of Top 10 hits like “Step by Step”, “You’ve Got It (The Right Stuff)”, “I’ll Be Lovin’ You (Forever)”, and “Cover Girl” the boys (Danny, Jordan, Joey, Jonathan, and Donnie) decided to break up in 1994.
Having paved the way for future boy bands like NSYNC, 98 Degrees and Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block (or NKOTB) were important in the evolution of the boy band. Now in 2008 they have decided to reunite, record an album and go out on tour. NKOTB was always very popular in Montreal and I don’t expect anything has changed in the 14 years they’ve been away. I’m sure just as they’ve gotten older and wiser so has their largely female fanbase, but I’m sure the screams when they perform will be just as deafening.
