Continuing on with recognizable works of literature, for their second production of the season the Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre is presenting Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". Directed by Greg Kramer and featuring a cast made up of the likes of Todd Sandormirsky (as Brick), Severn Thompson (as Maggie), Sharon Bakker (as Big Mama), and Barry Flatman (as Big Daddy), these are all Canadians who make us proud of our talented acting community.
Set in the South during a hot evening in the 1950s, the play weaves a poetic tale of ardor and indifference. Brick is a former high profile athlete who is married to Maggie, aka the Cat, and they have returned to the cotton plant he grew up on to celebrate the birthday of his sick father, Big Daddy. The alcohol flowing makes the atmosphere crackle with tension. Maggie is trying to fight to hold on to her marriage, which is hampered by Brick's excessive drinking. Brick blames Maggie for the suicide of his friend. The question of who will inherit the property when Big Daddy finally goes on to higher heights lingers in the air. For all these reasons there is plenty of fighting going on at the plantation on this evening. Big Mama is trying her best to keep her family dignified and together.
"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" explores illness, family, marriage, love, conflict, the breakdown of a family, and joy. It is one of the classic works in all the history of theatre as it examines the human condition on a level we can all relate to. Every emotion in the play remains relevant even today.
