It is our luck (and Team Canada's) that Montreal was chosen to host this year's Fed Cup Americas Zone Group 1 tournament. It is to be held at Uniprix Stadium (on the indoor courts, of course) and will bring some high quality tennis for us to watch during these cold winter days.
There are 6 teams competing and Canada will be in Group A with Puerto Rico and Bahamas. Group B is made up of Columbia, Brazil and Paraguay. The format is round-robin with the winner of each group facing off in the finals on Saturday. The overall winner will then represent the area in the World Group II qualifying round in April.
The Canadian team is made up of Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Stéphanie Dubois of Laval, Sharon Fichman of Toronto, and Valérie Tétreault of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. They are led by team captain Rene Collins. In 2008 the team came in third in the tournament, so they are looking to do better in '09 in front of the home crowd.
