I guess you can call this band, formed originally in Toronto, a Canadian indie band, but at times they have been working out of Los Angeles, London, New York, and Montreal. Made up of vocalist/keyboardist Emily Haines, bassist Josh Winstead, guitarist James Shaw, and drummer Joules Scott-Key, Metric have found success almost right from the beginning. With multiple Juno Award nominations, their songs being used on “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Gossip Girl” and “Entourage” and 2006 and 2009 Polaris Music Prize nominations, the band has always been firmly on the nation’s music radar.
Despite the fact that all the members have side projects going on (Haines and Shaw have played with Broken Social Scene, Haines has recorded a solo album, Scott-Key and Winstead have a side project called Bang Lime) they have always found time to make music together. Last April they released their fourth studio album, “Fantasies”.
The music they create is heavily influenced by synthesizer rock of the 80s and bands like New Order, Erasure and Pet Shop Boys. They were one of the first bands to jump on this 80s synth-pop sound and they have not jumped off.
