Formerly trained in her younger years at the National Ballet School and the Banff School of Fine Arts, Molly Johnson has known her career path from a very young age. Her musical path did take a circuitous route, though.
In the 1960s Molly was only in grade school when she and her brother, actor Clark Johnson, were selected by legendary Toronto theatre mogul Ed Mirvish to star in a production of Porgy and Bess. This led to roles in other musicals. Then she enrolled in the National Ballet School with the aim of becoming a choreographer. During her teens she was part of a group that did disco music. During the 80s and 90s she was frontwoman for several pop bands, Alta Moda, Big Sugar and Infidels.
Throughout all this time her first love musically was jazz. Finally, in 2000 she recorded her first solo jazz record, the self-titled "Molly Johnson". Then came 2003's "Another Day", 2006's "Messin' Around" and finally 2008's "Lucky". "Lucky", a record of standards, won her a Juno in 2009 for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.
