The now familiar blue and yellow tents are up once again in the area of the Old Port of Montreal. It seems almost like we expect the people from Cirque du Soleil to keep coming up with yet another fantastic show that will entertain and astound us.
TOTEM, the latest and most expensive Cirque du Soleil show, covers the evolution of man from the amphibian stage to the time when he begins to have the urge to fly. A turtle is used as the symbol for this evolutionary process. Characters involved in the show include cosmonauts, unicyclists, a hoop dancer, a Businessman, the Crystal Man, and many other types of creatures.
One twist that this show uses that even veteran Cirque du Soleil attendees will be surprised by (pleasantly, hopefully) is how much projection is involved. For instance, in one scene involving two people in a dinghy the images of rippling water are projected to amplify the atmosphere.
The cast of TOTEM is made up of 52 cast members from 19 different countries. All types of circus skills like acrobatics, dance, juggling, and unicyclists are used in the show.
In its usual stunning visual presentation and acrobatic interpretation of the story, TOTEM creates a whole new world for those in attendance.
