Eclectic and interesting are two words you could use to describe Peter Gabriel's career. He started off as lead singer and flautist (really?) of British rock group Genesis then after leaving the band he went on to a successful solo career and now he is concentrating largely on producing world music and coming up with new ways to distribute digital music. Let's not forget that he also is involved in several humanitarian efforts. No moss grows under this guy's feet!
Peter Gabriel founded Genesis in 1967 and in the beginning the band was known primarily for Gabriel's wild onstage presence. Not only was he quite dramatic, but his costumes, which had names, got plenty of press. After disputes about the direction of the band, Gabriel left Genesis in 1975. Drummer Phil Collins replaced Gabriel as the lead singer of Genesis.
His solo career began almost immediately after his departure from the band. Not missing a step he continued to be a successful recording artist with such hits as "Solsbury Hill", "Games Without Frontiers", "Biko", "I Don't Remember", "Shock the Monkey", "Don't Give Up", "In Your Eyes", "Sledgehammer", "Big Time", and "Red Rain". Just this past winter Peter Gabriel released his eighth solo album entitled "Scratch My Back". It is an album full of cover songs of different artists like Arcade Fire, David Bowie, Paul Simon, and Lou Reed.
Going on to win several Grammy Awards, an Oscar, a Polar Music Prize, and was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010. Well respected by his peers, Peter Gabriel has collaborated with the likes of Daniel Lanois, Kate Bush, Sinead O'Connor, Youssou N'Dour, Paula Cole, Natalie Merchant, and Stewart Copeland.
On this tour Peter Gabriel is being back by an orchestra of 54 musicians, but no drummers or guitarists. Should be interesting.
