Osheaga is an outdoors music and arts festival that strives to offer Montrealers a European style music festival. It brings great international and Canadian talent with music veterans and up and comers playing side by side. The environment is not only about the music, but also about social and environmental consciousness. Happening in the beautiful outdoor environment of Parc Jean Drapeau on Ste. Helen’s Island, there are four stages of different sizes at Osheaga: the two biggies – River Stage and Mountain Stage and the two smaller ones – Tree Stage and Green Stage.
When Osheaga began in 2006 roughly 25,000 attended to watch acts like Bedouin Soundclash, Ben Harper, Ben Lee, Brazilian Girls, Damian Marley, Flaming Lips, and Dinosaur Jr. perform. Each year it has grown since. In 2007 acts like The Smashing Pumpkins, Feist, Bloc Party, Damian Rice, Interpol, and Amy Winehouse came. In 2008 Broken Social Scene, Duffy, Iggy and the Stooges, Jack Johnson, Metric, MGMT, and N.E.R.D. took the stage. And last year Coldplay, Jason Mraz, The Roots, Arctic Monkeys, K’Naan, La Roux, and Rufus Wainwright
Each year more and more people passed through the gates and the acts became more and more pop oriented and commercial. Now, this might have angered some, but based on numbers I don’t think that is the opinion of most.
Some of the acts this year are Arcade Fire, Keane, Metric, Sarah Harmer, Snoop Dogg, Weezer, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, K’Naan, Fran Healy of Travis, Robyn, Ariane Moffatt, Sonic Youth, Devo, and The Black Keys. An eclectic line up that is sure to please all types of music fans.
