The four years in between this release and their previous, "A Matter of Life or Death", is the longest in the 35 years that Iron Maiden has been recording. Long time fans must have been on their edge of their seats with anticipation. Fans' reward for waiting this long is 76 minutes of new music. There is a payoff. The 10 songs on the album follow along a similar theme; it is almost like you are listening to a hard rock opera with several 8 minute epic tunes. You get some differences soundwise with power ballads mixed in with straight out rockers. Even after being in the game for so long the band still shows a willingness to venture out into areas they've never gone before which is very encouraging.
