Rogers Cup 2010 Preview

Every year since 1881 (the oldest tennis tournament after Wimbledon and the U.S. Open) Montreal hosts an upper tier professional tennis tournament. It alternates between the men and the women each year and this year we got the women. Though, players like the Williams sisters always seem to find a way or reason not to play. Once again this year Serena Williams, due to foot surgery, will not play nor will Justine Henin (elbow injury) or Samantha Stosur (arm injury). But you can count on seeing Kim Clijsters, Jelena Jankovic, Venus Williams, and Maria Sharapova compete for the trophy. Plus Canadians Stephanie Dubois, Valérie Tétreault and Aleksandra Wozniak should be granted wild card entries into the main draw of the tournament.

As an important hard court warm up for the U.S. Open and a big stop on the ATP Masters Series plus its $2.6 million in prize money the Rogers Cup usually does not have any problem attracting top level players. Past champions of the Rogers Cup read like a who's who in tennis as the list includes names like Justine Henin, Kim Klijsters, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Steffi Graf, and Martina Navritilova. Nor does it have any trouble filling the seats as it has continuously set attendance records for one week tournaments. For instance, in 2009 the Rogers Cup set a new attendance mark of 200,077. For this reason it is a smart idea not to wait until the last moment to get your tickets.

There are always special events that happen during the tournament each year that make it attractive to fans of every age. This is especially true on the first weekend (qualifying tournament) that has become Family Weekend. Also, this year tennis legend Chris Evert will be inducted into the Rogers Cup Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place during the evening session on Monday, August 16th on Centre Court.
