Does an evening spent at the theatre watching an twisted fairy tale sound enticing to you? Then the latest production by this Montreal-based award winning group should be right up your alley. It becomes even more enticing when you learn that the fairy tale involves mermaids. Everyone loves these mythical creatures. The Flood Thereafter is a very adult look at the mythology surrounding mermaids. It involves mermaids, burlesque, fish, beards, and baths. The story is equal parts tragedy, myth and what it means to be a woman.
Set in a fishing village located on the St. Lawrence, it is the story of the daughter of Grace named June. Grace, a mermaid, owned a local restaurant and cursed the community which resulted in the women of the town being driven away. Her daughter is the only woman who remains. June now works as a stripper in the town at Bar Emotion and the act of taking her clothes off makes the local men cry. Tired of her life, June wants a change and that occurs when a trucker named Denis arrives. He seems to have broken the curse.
Founded in 2005, the Talisman Theatre troupe specializes in presenting contemporary English language plays. Their latest production was written by Sarah Berthiaume and translated by Nadine Desrochers. Directed by Emma Tibaldo, this is a different type of play written from a feminist perspective that takes a look at how different cultures see women. Religion, pornography and myths are brought into the discussion of how we deal with women taking off their clothes in strip clubs.
