Her real name is Kate Victoria Tunstall and she was born June 23, 1975 in Scotland. Her mother was half-Chinese and half-Scottish and her father was Irish. Put up for adoption when she was only a few days old she was adopted by an English couple who brought her up in St. Andrews, Scotland. Her adopted family was not musical at all, but somehow KT caught the bug early.
After first going to school in Scotland, she then made a big move to the U.S. to Connecticut to attend a prestigious prep school. KT then moved to rural Vermont and spent some time busking on the streets of Burlington, Vermont. Then she moved back to England to do her university in London.
In London she began playing with indie bands. Striking out on her own, she signed with a label and released her debut in 2004 called "Eye to the Telescope". Due to rapper Nas cancelling an appearance Tunstall's big break, which she had 24 hours to prepare for, was an appearance on Later…with Jools Holland. She sang "Black Horse in a Cherry Tree" and caught the eye and ears of many who watched.
The album went on to be nominated for a 2005 Mercury Prize in the UK. It was finally released in the U.S. in 2006. Her breakthrough on this side of the ocean came about when American Idol performer Katharine McPhee performed "Black Horse in a Cherry Tree" on the show. She then released her second album "Drastic Fantastic" in 2007 and her third just this past fall called "Tiger Suit". Recognized for her superior musicianship and way with lyrics, KT has worked with fellow Scots Travis on one of their albums and with Suzanne Vega.
She is known for her energetic live shows in which she uses a loop pedal to work some magic, a four piece backing band and two female backing singers.
