The Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut – Blu-ray Edition

Fans of the graphic novel were foaming at the mouth with anticipation over the big screen version of this graphic novel. Expectations were very high and you would think that with this type of anticipation it could not help but disappoint, but that was not the case.

It is 1985 and Edward Blake also known as The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan – P.S. I Love You, The Accidental Husband) is murdered by being thrown out of his penthouse apartment's window. Fellow former Watchmen, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley – Semi-Pro, Little Children) is suspicious and decides to investigate. He does not believe that any average human could have killed the hero. Rorschach approaches another fellow Watchmen, Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson – Running With Scissors, The Phantom of the Opera – 2004), who won't help Rorschach. Next he approaches Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup – Public Enemies, Almost Famous), who also refuses to help and tells him and Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman – The Proposal, 27 Dresses) that nuclear war is inevitable. Undeterred Rorschach continues his investigation.

Silk Spectre II speaks to her mother, Silk Spectre (Carla Gugino – Race to Witch Mountain -2009, The Unborn) and she reflects back on the group of heroes that worked together under the name Watchmen.

When an attempt is made on another former Watchmen's life, Ozymandias (Matthew Goode – Match Point, Brideshead Revisited) they all begin to believe that someone is trying to kill all the former members of Watchmen. The Watchmen decide to get back together and quickly uncover a sinister plot behind everything.

Zach Snyder (Dawn of the Dead – 2004, 300) was the right choice as director for this film. He has an incredible talent for visually telling a story. The way his films look is eye popping. Snyder also tried as much as possible to stay faithful to the book. He had obvious respect for his source material and its fans. To keep the film version at a reasonable time length he was forced to cut some sub plots and characters, but this is inevitable.

The film is really for true fans and newcomers alike. For true fans there are plenty of little details and inside jokes. The depth given to the story will please fans. The flashbacks and history of Watchmen will catch newcomers up to a point at which they will be able to understand what is going on.

Each character has been well cast and the cast does a great job portraying their hero. It will be hard to decide which hero is your favourite as they all have some great or intriguing qualities. Even the smaller characters all have something interesting about them. You are in for a visual treat with this film made even more splendid by the blu-ray technology.

Every little detail has been thought of and gone over with this film. And sometimes that is why it is a little overwhelming. Though I don't mean this in a bad way. I just mean that this is the type of film that you will need to watch several times to soak it all in. I mean even the soundtrack is perfect.
