After ending things with Katy Perry, American singer and rapper Travie McCoy decided to make a solo album away from his band Gym Class Heroes. His first solo album “Lazarus” was released in 2010. It spawned the hit single “Billionaire” which peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
As a teenager he was a fan of punk rock and hip hop. When he helped found Gym Class Heroes in 2001 his two musical loves were able to co-exist in one group. After achieving mainstream success with the band they decided to go on hiatus for three years. It is during that time that McCoy released his solo album.
Dropping out of college at age 20, McCoy decided to focus on his music and tattooing. While teaching art and working at a tattoo parlor during the day and a gas station at night, he decided to quit it all to focus on art. Before he attained success with Gym Class Heroes McCoy was supporting himself by selling his paintings.
On “Lazarus”, an album recorded in Miami while he recovered from drug addiction, there are guest vocals by Bruno Mars, Cee-Lo Green and T-Pain. After the album was released he went on to tour with Bruno Mars and Rihanna.
