This debut album was huge in the U.K. when released in 2010. Now, Ellie Goulding has come across the ocean to try and repeat her success.
After listening to this 22-year-old’s first album I have to say that she is like no other. Good? Bad? Definitely the former. The sound on the album is an interesting mixture of electronic, pop and folk. Moving from incredible dance beats to acoustic guitar tracks and then back is a little bit of a whirlwind at times. Lyrically it is even an odder mixture with songs about love then about space. As in outer space. At several points I felt like I was listening to a film score for a really cool independent film. Simply listening to her voice gives you an indication that you are in for something different as there definitely is some Bjork-ish elements to it. Ellie definitely dances to the beat of a different drum.
In this case being different is a good thing. And it doesn’t feel like an act or put on for effect. We are actually getting the true artist/person here. It doesn’t have the effect of being off putting for its strangeness; it just makes you curious to hear more.
