Mystery Inc. is back! In this live-action film Scooby, Shaggy and the rest of the gang are back and doing what they do best – making us laugh while they solve spooky mysteries. Settle yourself down in front of your blu-ray player and large screen television and get ready for an over-the-top B movie.
The Mystery Inc. gang, Fred (Robbie Amell – Cheaper By the Dozen 2, Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins), Daphne (Kate Melton), Velma (Hayley Kiyoko- from television’s The Wizards of Waverly Place), and Shaggy (Nick Palatas), are all going to work at a country club owned by Daphne’s Uncle Thorny (Ted McGinley – from television’s Married with Children) for the summer. While there some strange things start happening around the lake. For instance a giant Frog Monster is going around scaring the townsfolk.
I’m not sure if it is a problem of live-action versus animation or what, but I have never really liked any of the live-action takes on this famous animated show. I loved the show and its hijinks, but have pretty much hated all the attempts at feature films. Plus the fact that there is very little Scooby-Doo (character whose name is in the title of film!!) in the film rather aggravated me. Animation too hard? Expensive? Yet they made wonderful Frog Monsters! What’s up with that? More of the monster than one of the heroes? Whatever the reason there really is not excuse and it weakened the whole film for me.
Also what was up with everyone in the gang dating each other? It was kinda awkward for me. And ya know, it is all about me. All this dating ends up taking plenty of screen time away from the mystery, which is why we are all watching, no?
And musical numbers??!!! I don’t even want to go there!
