The Joy Formidable – The Big Roar

People sit up and take notice of you in the music world when people like Courtney Love and Shirley Manson of Garbage rave about you.  That plus critical acclaim after releasing an 8 track EP from The Guardian, Spin and The London Times has made The Joy Formidable a band to watch out for.

Welsh band The Joy Formidable wrote most of the songs for this album while on the road. They are a trio that includes Ritzy Bryan on lead vocals and guitar, Matthew Thomas on drums and Rhydian Dafydd on bass.  The Big Roar contains 12 tracks that are of the modern rock variety.  Guitars that are all speed ahead and drums that pound out plenty of beats per minute.  At times they will remind you of our beloved Arcade Fire and others Pixies or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or is it Sonic Youth?  Whatever and whomever they sound like it is powerful, atmospheric rock at all times.  The first song brings it hard for over 7 minutes of pure power.  Plenty of emotion, but always looking for the silver lining in life.  An interesting juxtaposition of pessimism and optimism.
