When I saw funk/soul act Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings perform at Osheaga a few years ago I was blown away by the energy of the front woman. Sharon Jones is a little dynamo on stage! At the age of 53 she shows no signs of slowing down. She and her band are part of the revivalist trend that is going on that is trying to recreate 60s and 70s soul music. The vocalist teamed up with the Dap-Kings, the band on Amy Winehouse’s smash debut album, roughly 10 years ago and they have been working together since.
Theirs is an authentic sound of the type that you don’t get very often in today’s music world. All four of their albums, Dap Dippin’ (2002), Naturally (2005), 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007), and I Learned the Hard Way (2010) have garnered critical acclaim. As good as their recordings, done in analog like the old days, are what the band is known for is their live shows. They tour non-stop and even participate in high profile festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo.
