This incredibly talented Brit has just exploded on the charts with her latest release. Adele’s first album “19” (the age she was when she wrote it) was a hit and earned her two Grammy Awards. The Grammys (Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Performance) were unexpected as she pretty much had flown under the radar on this side of the Atlantic. She was another of British female singers who were singing in that retro soul style. It was only after her appearance on SNL (on the Sarah Palin show) in which North America woke up and took notice of her.
Her second album “21” (I don’t have to explain it now, do I?) came out four years later in 2011. It is a massive hit. The first single “Rolling in the Deep” has been at or near the top of the charts for months and the album itself has been number one for many weeks. Adele mania has taken over.
The sound of her music on the second album has changed from soul to roots and country. She has said it is because her tour bus driver played a lot of contemporary country music while she was on the road. Though it was her first exposure to that type of music it obviously left an impression on her. There is still a “classic” sound to the music. The sentiment behind the songs has not changed from the first album as it is another one about heartbreak. She wrote the songs, like she did for “19”, just after a brutal break up with her then boyfriend. Pain begets good art they say.
Adele has become so huge that her entire North American tour is sold out. Including Montreal. Sorry folks!
