Michael Bublé has said that his latest album Christmas is an early holiday gift to his fans. If that is the case then I hope he kept the bill as I will be returning it. For me it almost seems as if he is just going through the motions and releasing an album filled with songs that everyone and his dog has recorded. I mean, do we really need another version of “Jingle Bells”, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” or “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”? I think not. All are, of course, backed by big band arrangements. Now, normally I eat up big band music with a spoon, but such is not the case here. There is absolutely no swing to be found. Like Michael Bublé had recorded this album past his bedtime. So laid back I could barely get though it without falling asleep. There are some original or interesting moments on the album. Songs like “Santa Baby” (which we have normally only heard sung by women), “Cold December Night” (an original) and “Mis Deseos/Feliz Navidad” (with its Latin flair) are welcome distractions from the rest of the songs. An album that definitely falls into the “ok” category. Disappointing coming from such a talented artist.
