RIDM Film Festival 2011 Preview

The Rencontres Internationales de Documentaire de Montreal is an important venue for documentary filmmakers in Quebec and Canada to get their films seen and onto the radar of the film going public.  Independent filmmakers don’t have the large studio backing to facilitate the promotion of their films, so it is mechanisms like the RIDM that play an important role in getting the word out about documentary films.  It is not only local films that are screened over the course of the festival, but documentary pictures from all over the world.

Montreal International Documentary Festival was founded by documentary filmmakers in 1998 and has been growing ever since.  Each year around 100 films are screened over the course of the festival.  Films come from the far reaches of the world including Quebec, Germany, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, and Israel.

A myriad of subjects are covered during the festival.  The opening film, Crazy Horse (Ken Wiseman), is one that looks at what goes on backstage at the famous Parisian cabaret.  My Freedom, Your Freedom (Diana Näcke) follows two women as they are released from prison.  Fortune Teller (Xu Tong) is set in China and reveals the story of an illegal fortune teller.  Inside Lara Rox (Mia Donovan) presents the warts-and-all story of a female porn star from Montreal who contracted AIDS on the job.  The festival is like a microcosm of what is great about documentary films in that anything you could possibly want to know about is covered.

Besides the films there are other types of activities running during the festival.  Tonight (November 9th) there will be an opening party hosted by local celebrity, Plastik Patrik.  The fun starts at 9:30 p.m. at the RIDM Lounge at the Cinematheque Quebecoise.  Then there is also Master Classes, Discussions, Film Debates, Parties, and other Events.
