Though she is only 24-years-old Lights has packed a lot of life in her short amount of time on Earth. First, she traveled all over the world with her missionary parents stopping to live in places like the Philippines and Jamaica. Then she moved to Toronto and legally changed her name to Lights from Valerie Boxleitner. Hired musician/television-radio show host Jian Ghomeshi as her manager. Started her own record label called Lights Music. Released her debut album in 2009 entitled The Listening. Won the Best New Artist Juno in 2009. Released an acoustic EP entitled (what else?) Acoustic. Opened up for Keane on a few of their dates in the fall of 2009. Did a few dates during the summer of 2010 on Lilith Fair. Played a set at Osheaga in September 2011. Finally, on October 4, 2011 released her sophomore album Siberia. Phew! Oh, and did I mention that she got engaged somewhere in the middle of all that?
If you are not familiar with Lights – she is an electro-pop act who has become familiar to fans through her synth and keytar playing. Lights cites acts like U2, ELO and Supertramp as influences. Her latest album was greatly influenced by her introduction to dubstep. The newer stuff is more (as she says) “gritty and grimy” with less of an effort to record something “perfect”. She has had commercial success with her singles “Saviour”, “Second Go” and her latest, “Toes”.
