I have a test for you. If you want to know if you are human and have all the requisite emotions that species entails then listen to this Danny Darst album. The ten songs on American Songwriter take you through a gamut of emotions and if you are in any way human you will feel each and every one of them. Darst does not have a great voice, but like Bob Dylan (now don’t jump all over me I’m not say Danny Darst is of the same calibre of songwriter as Dylan), when you write good lyrics you don’t need one. Same goes for Leonard Cohen. His voice does express the emotions and have that weathered, “experienced” quality about it. You believe that he knows the emotions he sings of. An authentic slice of Americana set against a country-folk musical backdrop.
