British duo The Ting Tings are Jules de Martino (drums/guitar/bass/piano) and Katie White (vocals/guitar/bass drums/bass). They got together in late 2007, signed with Columbia Records UK and came onto music fans’ radars in 2008 with the release of their single “That’s Not My Name”. That song went on be a number one hit on the British charts as did the album it came from entitled We Started Nothing. Their success led to them being nominated in 2009 for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. In February of this year they released their sophomore album, Sounds From Nowheresville. The first single from that album is “Hang It Up”.
Katie White had been in an all-girl punk group when she met de Martino. They bonded over their mutual love for Portishead. Once they gained some notoriety they demonstrated that they were not your typical band. Their music has been used for the video game FIFA 12 which is quite typical and they appeared on SNL in 2012 – again quite typical. But they sort of broke away from the usual pop band pack by appearing on the children’s show Yo Gabba Gabba and performing a cover of Altered Images’ “Happy Birthday” then an instrumental version of their song “Shut Up and Let Me Go” was used on another kids’ show, PBS’s Dinosaur Train.
