After Aussies Nick Cave and Mick Harvey’s band The Birthday Party broke up they decided to strike out together and find other members to make a new band. The band was formed in 1983 in London and were called Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Founding member Harvey left the band in 2009. Presently the band is made up of Cave (vocals), Warren Ellis (violin/multi-instrumentalist), Martyn P. Casey (bass), Conway Savage (keyboards), Thomas Wydler (percussion), Ed Kuepper (guitar), Barry Adamson (drums), and Jim Sclavunos (percussionist).
The music the band makes is a brand of alternative rock that has roots in punk, blues and gothic rock. This year they released the album Push the Sky Away and the sound is a departure for them. It is filled with synthesizers and very little guitar.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have not really had any significant commercial success, except maybe the duet they recorded with Kylie Minogue called “Where the Wild Roses Grow”, but they have achieved an almost cult status due to their constant international touring and a huge amount of songs they can play due to their fifteen albums.
