Madison, Wisconsin is not exactly the place you’d think an alternative rock band would come out of. Though technically not all the members are from Madison in that lead singer Shirley Manson is from Scotland. Band members Butch Vig and Duke Erikson decided that they wanted to have a band with a female lead singer who didn’t have an extremely girly voice. After seeing a video by the band Angelfish they knew that Shirley Manson would be perfect. After her band broke up and the members of Garbage struggled through a couple of auditions and sessions with Shirley it finally began to work.
Butch Vig had begun his career as a producer (he had co-produced Nirvana’s Nevermind) and remix artists (he had worked on tracks by Depeche Mode, House of Pain, U2, and Nine Inch Nails) and so he was firmly planted in the grunge genre. When Garbage began writing and recording songs they consciously decided to make a pop record in order to distance themselves from Vig’s reputation. They have throughout their career made pop records that have a variety of influences.
Garbage has had huge international success in that they have sold over 17 million albums with a variety of music that has always been rather edgy. Some have classified their music as sci-fi pop in that it is kind of futuristic sounding. Together for almost 20 years it is good to see that they are back together and touring and making music.
