For the past 15 springs the Montreal Botanical Gardens has hosted an event called Butterflies Go Free. This is their 16th year and the Botanical Gardens is a wonderful place to vistit all the time, so this special exhibit makes it all that much more enjoyable.
Butterflies, who have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, are a kind of super species in that they have managed to thrive on this ever changing planet. Despite all the changes in climate and habitat there are a catalogued 175,000 varieties of butterflies and an estimated 300,000 yet to be discovered.
The exhibit, which takes place in the Main Exhibition Greenhouse, features many varieties of local and exotic butterfly species. Between 50-75 varieties of butterflies equalling thousands of butterflies and moths will be housed in the greenhouse and they come from locations around the world. The stars of this year’s exhibit are the local favourites – the monarch. This year there will even be a Monarch Lounge designed by Quebec designer Liz Vandal.
