Barenaked Ladies – Grinning Streak

What better way for Canada’s clown princes of music to celebrate their 25th anniversary then to release an album? Grinning Streak is their twelfth album and they worked with a trio of producers who have worked with other top of the charts acts like Maroon 5, Metric, Feist and Train. You can really hear the differences that each of these producers brought to the process. Not a complete train of thought, Grinning Streak is more like three short stories. The band has changed in sound and songwriting with the departure of founding member Steven Page, but a couple of the constants are the humour and the strong musicianship of the band. Within the twelve tracks of the album you find a ton of catchy and upbeat pop tunes. Lead single “Boomerang” is a perfect example of the formula that allowed the band to become one of the most successful coming out the Great White North. “Smile” and “Gonna Walk” continue along that same musical path.  Plenty of toe-tappers to be found. What brought the album down for me is the fact that all the songs sound pretty much the same.  Same tempo and melodies. Despite this if you are a fan of the band this is the perfect addition to your road trip repertoire.
