Elvis Presley – Elvis at Stax

In Elvis’s hometown of Memphis there is a famous recording studio called Stax. It was identified as the pinnacle studio in the Southern-soul music genre. That same studio launched the careers of Wilson Pickett, Isaac Hayes and Otis Redding.  There Presley recorded some great tracks there during a session in 1973. Enough to make this 3 CD/55 song package. While the sound is rather varied as you can indulge in some country, rock, gospel, blues and funk. This recording is important in that by this point Elvis had taken complete control of his career and was making the music he liked.  Songs like “Raised on Rock”, “Take Good Care of Her”, “I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby” and “Just a Little Bit” really demonstrate the width and breadth of this man’s talent.  And the fact that he was smart enough to surround himself with some of the industry’s more talented musicians. On the ballads you really get to hear the quality of his voice and how much he put into songs that resonated with him.
