The 80s was a time of New Wave, one hit wonders and hair rock. It is a wonder against that backdrop that the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails led by Trent Reznor got together and found a crowd. In the beginning the band was considered to be an underground outfit catering to a very particular niche of music fan. As the years went on they garnered more attention and their audience grew. In the 1990s, the era of grunge and a more raw sound in the music industry, they began to achieve commercial success for the first time. Soon after came a couple of Grammy wins and over 30 million in album sales.
Calling Nine Inch Nails a band is not exactly correct. Trent Reznor is the sole permanent member of NIN. He writes, produces and records each album release himself then when it comes time to tour he hires musicians to take on the road with him. Towards the end of the 90s both Time and Spin magazines named Reznor one of the most influential people in music. Rolling Stone then place Nine Inch Nails at number 94 of the list of Top 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
In the live arena the songs are often altered a little to be able to perform them live. The band is also known for the elaborate light show that accompanies the music.
