The Weeknd – Kiss Land

Over the past couple of years there has been a good amount of high quality urban music emanating from this country. When most people think of Canadian music they don’t first go to hip hop, R&B or rap, but artists like Drake, Shad, Kardinall Offishall, K’Naan, and The Weeknd that has changed. Though The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) produces what is definitely a chill brand of music it is still firmly in the R&B family. Actually the material on Kiss Town surpasses chill to venture ever so slightly into the area of mystical and futuristic. This is how I picture R&B sounding thirty years from now. In other words, the guy is ahead of the curve. That being said his music is not for everyone as it has that mysterious and dark feel to it. Definitely not a pick me up album. Though it certainly is sexy. I love the mix of his higher range voice and the atmospheric beats he lays down to accompany them. It is a nice juxtaposition. “Belong to the World” is a great example of The Weeknd not allowing himself to be put in a box. It is a new sound for him and yet a logical progression. If you liked his mixtapes then you should run to your computer and download this gem.
