Formed in 1977 this Scottish rock band had their best times during the 1980s. With singles like “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, “Alive and Kicking”, “Promised You a Miracle”, “Sanctify Yourself”, and “All the Things She Said” kept them at the top of the charts throughout the decade.
Simple Minds evolved out of the punk rock band, Johnny & the Self-Abusers. Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill formed the group and named it after a lyric from a David Bowie song. They began as a pure pop outfit and then with their second album they went a more darker route and were lumped in with the British New Wave acts and finally in the New Romantic category along with the likes of Duran Duran, Ultravox and Spandau Ballet. While the 80s was the peak of their commercial success the band continued to record and tour during the 90s and 2000s.
The lineup of the band has changed over the years. Jim Kerr (lead singer) along with Charlie Burchill (guitar/keyboards) have been the two constants with Mel Gaynor (drums) – off and on since 1982, Andy Gillespie (keyboards) – off and on since 2002, and Ged Grimes (bass) – since 2010 joining at different points.
