Hockey is our game and the holiday season is a busy time of year for Canadian hockey fans. Besides NHL games there is also the World Junior Championship and the hockey version of Champions League – the Spengler Cup. It is a tournament that has been around since 1923 and that features some of the best club teams in Europe plus a Canadian team made up of the best Canadians playing in Europe. This year for the second time an American Hockey League will be there representing the United States.
This year the teams competing are the hosts HC Davos (Switzerland), CSKA Moskau (Russia), Rochester Americans (U.S.), HC Vitkovice Steel (Czech Republic), Genève-Servette (Switzerland), and Team Canada. Each team will have players you recognize. HC Davos has defenseman Ville Koistinen (Nashville Predators) and goalie Mika Noronen (Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks), CSKA Moskau has forwards Sergei Fedorov (Detroit Red Wings) and Alexander Radulov (Nashville Predators), the Rochester Americans has forwards Michael Zigomanis (Buffalo Sabres) and Luke Adam (Buffalo Sabres), HC Vitkovice Steel has defenseman Michal Barinka (Chicago Black Hawks) and goalie Roman Malek (Philadelphia Flyers), Genève-Servette has forwards Matthew Lombardi (Los Angeles Kings, Calgary Flames) and Kaspars Daugavins (Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins), and Team Canada has goalie Chris Mason (Nashville Predators), defenseman Jim Vandermeer (Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers), and forwards Anthony Stewart (Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers), Brett McLean (Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Black Hawks) and Glen Metropolit (Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins).
The games begin on Boxing Day and the winner is crowned on New Year’s Eve in this short tournament.
