Rock band Green Day came out with their album American Idiot in 2004. It truly was a modern day concept album in that it was a rock opera. The songs on the album all center around one character they named Jesus of Suburbia. This anti-hero hates the town he lives in so he strikes out on his own in the big city. The theme of rage vs. love comes up often throughout the songs/story.
The musical version was written by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer with music by Green Day and lyrics by Armstrong. It included all the songs from the album American Idiot supplemented by songs from 21st Century Breakdown, some b-sides from American Idiot and a new song entitled “When It’s Time”. It debuted in 2009 at the Berkeley Repetoire Theatre then moved on to Broadway. Now it is touring around North America.
Its story centers around three male main characters, Johnny, Will and Tunny. Johnny and Tunny flee the life they see as stifling in the suburbs while Will stays behind to work through things with his pregnant girlfriend. Johnny and Tunny, without their parents telling them what to do, go wild in the city testing out the excitement and freedom offered there. Tunny soon realizes it is not all it is cut out to be and signs up for the military. He is soon shipped off to fight in the war. Johnny finds parts of himself that he doesn’t really like, falls in love and experiences loss.
Though the reviews for the show were mixed it did end up winning two Tony Awards in 2010 and was nominated for Best Musical. In 2011 a recording from the show won a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
