A two-part episode from season 5 is combined to make one feature length film in Unification. It is an interesting part of the history of the story behind Star Trek. Can be followed whether you are a fan of the series or not.
The Federation has asked Captain Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) for his help in locating a missing ambassador who might have defected. Choosing Picard makes sense when it is revealed that the missing ambassador is Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy). Picard has had a special relationship with Spock’s father, Sarek (played by Mark Lenard), and so he is the logical choice to find his son. The problem is that Sarek is sick and dying so getting any useful information from him proves tricky.
Based on the little strands of information garnered from Spock’s dying father Picard and Data (played by Brent Spiner) disguise themselves as Romulans and head to that planet where they believe Spock is. Once they arrive they do find Spock and find out he has not defected. Rather he is working in his own way on a unification between the Vulcans and Romulans. Picard is happy and thinks it is a worthy endeavour. The only problem will be that the Romulans are not as honest as Spock thinks they are and are really working on a total domination of the Vulcans.
It is very cool for fans that Leonard Nimoy is back playing Spock. Spock really is an iconic character and an integral part of the series. The story is interesting, some humour and touching parts, and the acting (because it is largely Stewart, Spiner and Nimoy) is solid.
