Formed in Nashville, Tennessee in 1999 Kings of Leon are a family act rock band. A trio of Followill brothers, Caleb, Ivan and Michael, are rounded out by cousin Cameron. In a kind of reverse of what usually happens to American bands Kings of Leon first success was in the UK with numerous Top 40 singles and a couple of Brit Awards and then they exploded in 2008 in their home country. It was with the release of their third album Only the Night and the singles “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody” that the band finally broke through in the U.S.
With huge success comes a price. That price was paid by the band and it resulted in a highly publicized incident when lead singer Caleb walked off the stage at a show in Texas during a huge world tour in 2011. This led to a stint in rehab for him and the band taking a break. Group and personal problems had to be worked through. When they came back together as a band it was with a fresh outlook and a ton of new material.
The band sound out of the gate was a mixture of Southern rock and blues but now has developed into a more alternative rock sound. You can hear plenty of U2 in their harmonies and guitar playing now. Their sixth and most recent album Mechanical Bull was released in the fall of 2013.
