The Blues Brothers: Steelbook – Blu-ray Edition

the blues brothers steelbookThe Blues Brothers story could not be a simpler one. Jake (the late, great John Belushi), just released from a stint in prison, and his brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) decide to start up their old band in an effort to raise enough money in order to save their old orphanage from foreclosure. This simple plot ultimately produced one of the zaniest comedies of that era (late 70s, early 80s), and the best of the Saturday Night Live film adaptations that has ever graced the silver screen. None of the recent Saturday Night Live skits that have been turned into films has fared nearly as well as this classic gem that features cameos by the likes of James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles.

Throughout the film’s 133 minutes (148 for the extended version included with this DVD release) we bare witness to tons of exciting and hilarious car chases and a lot of chaotic mayhem as Jake and Elwood prove that they are in fact as good at getting into trouble as they are at playing the blues. Along the way we meet a host of interesting characters, namely a very odd country and western band, a group of neo-Nazis, and a crazy weapon-toting woman.

This 25th anniversary DVD addition includes an option to view the film in its extended, glorious length. These extra minutes, 15 to be exact, feature extended versions of the film’s most famous sequences, particularly the “revelation at the church” scene as well as some new explosions and a few new laughs not found in the theatrical cut. For fans of the original film, and I know there are many of you out there, this is an essential purchase, as it also includes the excellent 56-minute documentary, “Stories Behind the Making of The Blues Brothers.”
