Judy Collins is an American singer-songwriter who is probably known as much for her social activism as she is for her music. In regards to her music, she runs the gamut when it comes to genres as she has dabbled in folk, pop, rock, and standards.
A classically trained pianist, Judy Collins was immersed in music almost from birth as her father was a singer and radio disc jockey. On stage she began at the age of 13 performing complex piano pieces. Though she was always interested in folk music. When her piano teacher began to discourage her interest in folk Judy decided to end her piano lessons and focus on making the music that captured her heart and mind. She began playing guitar and moved from Connecticut to New York City where she began busking. After signing with Elektra Records, a label she has remained with for 35 years, she released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, at the age of 22. She has continued to record music since the 60s with her most famous album being Both Sides Now.
Throughout her life she has battled such issues as polio, bulimia, tuberculosis, the suicide of her only son, alcoholism, and clinical depression. Still her love for music remains. In more recent years she has concentrated on writing, most particularly a memoir.
