From the palatial city of Versailles in France, Phoenix has been slotted into the alternative rock genre. I guess this is due to their origins as a garage band rather than their sound overall. Meaning I think they fit comfortably into popular music, but, hey, it’s really half dozen of one and six of the other.
Phoenix is comprised of vocalist Thomas Mars (who is married to director Sophia Coppola), bassist Deck d’Arcy, guitarist Chris Mazzalai, and guitarist Laurent Brancowitz. They released their debut album, United, in 2000. The most recognizable single from the album was the track “Too Young” which was also on the soundtrack for the film Lost in Translation and part of the film Shallow Hal. Sophomore album Alphabetical came along in 2004. This release brought about some commercial success for the quartet. Their popularity has grown steadily right up to the release of their fifth album, Bankrupt!, in 2013.
Throughout their career other than a two year live hiatus the band has toured extensively. Last summer they took part in Osheaga here in Montreal. On stage is where they and their music really shines.
