George Michael backed up by a full orchestra meaning this is not dance pop George Michael. This is the stuff that some people’s dreams are made of. On his latest album George Michael classes it up (though I believe he has done a standards album before) and uses the orchestra to fill out his interpretations of classic songs like “Wild is the Wind”, “My Baby Just Cares For Me” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” as well as his own songs like “A Different Corner”, “Praying for Time” and “One More Try”. Despite all the personal demons that he has fought over the length of his career (hiding his sexuality then his drug problems) there is no denying that man has talent and quite a voice. The songs were all recorded during his Symphonica tour of a couple of years ago. While it is all wonderful I’m wondering if the sonic monotony of ballad after ballad other than “Feeling Good” could have been broken up by the inclusion of a few well chosen up tempo songs? Just a suggestion.
